Italian Design Day 2023

On the occasion of Italian Design Day 2023, the annual thematic review of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Embassy of Italy in Manama organized three events in Bahrain.

The Italian Design Day is celebrated every year in over 100 countries around the world and consists of an extensive program of promotional activities carried out by a network of Italian embassies, consulates, cultural institutes to promote Italian design and architecture all over the world. In this context, the Italian Embassy in Bahrain will host Federica Sala, an Italian curator and design advisor whose fields of activity range from design to art and architecture. Federica Sala also combines her work as curator with editorial work for international publishing houses such as Rizzoli and is also Editor in Chief of the magazine “The Good Life Italia”, dedicated to the Italian business and lifestyle sector.

On the occasion of the Italian Design Day 2023, Federica Sala presented three events in line with the theme chosen for the year 2023: “The quality that enlightens. The energy of design for people and the environment”.

The first event, a workshop titled “A journey into cultural marketing”, held on March 14 at 5:30 pm at The Collective Hub, Bahrain’s leading co-working space for investors and startups. The workshop gave an introduction to the concept of cultural marketing and a series of interactive exercises to stimulate global awareness and develop cultural marketing strategies tailored to local and global realities. 

On March 15 at 8:00 pm, a conference open to the public, on the main theme of the review: “The Quality That Enlightens. The Energy of Design for People and the Environment”, was held at the Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa Center for Culture and Research. Federica Sala focused on the concept of “quality made in Italy”, which goes beyond the mere production of the design project, be it industrial or artisanal, including also the quality of the ideas, the research and the creativity of the designer. Furthermore, the theme of the Italian quality will be explored through the modern lens of sustainability and ethical design.

As guests of honor, the members of the Italian Delegation to the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union – held in Manama- parliamentarians Lia Quartapelle Procopio and Deborah Bergamini, the President of Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, Shaikha Mai bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, former Minister of Culture. Amongst the invitees, numerous exponents of the Bahraini society.

Finally, on March 16, at 11:00 am, Federica Sala held a lecture titled: “Quality that Enlightens Italian Design”, at the University of Bahrain, in the presence of students from the college of Art, Business, Engineering and IT. During the lecture, she examined the heritage of Italian design, which combines creativity and industry, through the design process. Moreover, the designer focused on the quality of Italian design in all its forms and phases, from the original idea behind a project, to the ingenuity of exploring forms of design in terms of research of new materials, sustainability applied to the production process and final social impact of the project.
