20 October 2021 – an online lecture on the charachter of Dante’s Beatrice. Spiritual love and poetic inspiration

The 20 of October 2021 at 11.30 am Bahrain Time (10.30 am Italian Time), Leyla Livraghi, Post-doctoral fellow “Hypermedia Dante Network” PRIN, Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistic at University of Pisa will conduct an online lesson on Dante introducing the figure of Beatrice, in the context of the Italian Cultural Center “Grazia Deledda” at the Royal University for Women in Bahrain.

Beatrice is the ideal topic to introduce Dante’s works and poetics to the audience. This female poetic symbol is much more than the recipient of Dante’s spiritual love, she represents his poetic inspiration in two of his main works: the juvenile Vita nova and his masterpiece, the Commedia. Beatrice will be introduced as a historical character in the context of the Late-Medieval Florence, in which the same Dante lived. Beatrice as a fictional character in the Vita nova and Commedia two of the most beautiful pieces of poetry that Dante wrote about her will be read and commented on, the sonnet Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare (So kind and so honest she looks) and Beatrice’s arrival in Pur. XXX, 19-39. The lecture will conclude with a glance into the legacy of Beatrice in art history, and precisely in the 19th century artistic movement called ‘Pre-Raphaelites’.

It will be possible to follow the lecture online through a Zoom link:
